The New Garment

"I'd never go in there," my friend said as we passed the charity shop. "My mother taught me never to wear something that was on someone else's back." Until that moment, I hadn't thought much about second-hand clothes for a long time. But when I answered her, I said, "Well, it's true: I'm thankful I don't have to wear second-hand clothes now, but there was a time in my life when I thought of them as God's provisions."I recalled the Christmas concert when I wanted a new dress. My mother patiently explained that she and dad didn't have the money right then, but we could pray about it. The day before the concert, my aunt came in with a bag of clothes that my cousin had outgrown. You could hear my squeals of delight all up and down the Point Road when I discovered what was inside: a beautiful grey-flocked party dress with the big pink bow to tie around my waist. I was glad that I hadn't heard my friend's criticism of second-hand clothes back then, for the next night as I sang my solo, "Once in royal David's city", I felt like a princess in my cousin's dress. There were other times, too, when God provided just the right outfit when I needed it, and I was always thankful for His provision.
We Christians don't need to despair if our budget is tight and this is a time in our lives when we need to wear second-hand clothes. God offers each of us a most beautiful garment, the garment of salvation, coupled with the robe of righteousness. These garments are designed and tailor-made for each person who has accepted His gift, the gift of salvation paid for by God's Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross of Calvary.
Isaiah 61:10 - I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (NIV)
Prayer: Dear God, help us to realize how special we are in Your sight. Please put Your garment of salvation and robe of righteousness on those who pray asking for forgiveness for their sin today. Amen.
