Where Are We Going?

Devotional for Thursday, April 28, 2005 by Judy Miller

Daniel 1:8 - Daniel purposed in his heart. (KJV)

We live in a small city that is growing rapidly. There didn't use to be a rush hour in the morning and afternoon. It was kind of a sleepy little city. As it has grown, though, there are rush hours now.

I really noticed that the other morning on my way to work. All of us were intent on getting to work. We had a purpose. Each of us had a different destination, but we did know where we were going. Each of us had a different route to go on, but again, we knew where we were going.

I thought about that in reference to our individual private lives. First and foremost, we need to accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour. That will ensure that we go to heaven.

But then what? What is our purpose after that? Do we know what our purpose is, or are we floundering around trying to find meaning to life? Do we know where we are going?

In the deep recesses of our souls, we know that our purpose is to serve God. Every one of us has a different route to go on to do that though. There are manual labourers and professionals; there are housewives and mothers; there are pastors and teachers; there are doctors and nurses. The list could go on and on. We can all be serving the Lord with our professions and thereby have a purpose and meaning to our lives. I would like to suggest that we need to check our motives often to see if we're serving God and others, or if we are serving ourselves.

Matthew 4:10 - Thou shalt worship the Lord your God and him only shalt thou serve. (KJV)

Prayer: Father in heaven, how easy it is to get wrapped up in meaningless things in life. Help us to keep You front and foremost in our minds so that we are serving You at all times. Help us to be a blessing to someone today. Amen.
