Selah

Devotional for Monday, May 9, 2005 by Brenda Wood

Psalm 3:1-2 - Lord, how they are increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me. Many are saying of me, there is no help for him in God. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! (AMP)

I was having one of those "poor me" days. In no time, "Poor Me" was feeling even worse. Eventually my thoughts turned to an incident that had happened many years before. Moan, sigh, Poor Me!

Finally (thank God!) the Holy Spirit got a grip on me, and I turned to the Psalms for comfort.

Selah! -- Pause and consider? Pause and consider -- that I had been treated unfairly; that others had caused trouble? Selah! Now I could justify my long past circumstances. (Hurrah, God!)

Then I read the next verses. Oops!

Psalm 3:3-4 - But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. With my voice I cry to the Lord, and He hears and answers me out of His holy hill. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! (AMP)

And I did. God had long since healed any hurt. God had been my shield, my glory, and the lifter of my head through it all. God had won the war in my heart, so why was I bothering to revisit the battlefield?

How wise our God is. He asks us to be calmly realistic about any of our circumstances and then reminds us to consider calmly that He is still in charge and that He gives the victory. Selah!

Prayer: Oh, Father God, thank You for Selah. Today, help us to pause and consider our trouble, but then to move on to pause and consider that You are our shield, our glory, and the lifter of our heads. Selah. In Jesus' name. Amen.
