Dancing

Devotional for Wednesday, June 8, 2005 by Judy Miller

Proverbs 3:6 - In everything you do, put God first and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success. (TLB)

One of my friends is definitely a leader. She leads her husband and her children. Her husband is very easygoing and just accepts her as she is and goes with the flow.

They have always wanted to learn how to dance, so recently, they started taking dance lessons. Due to her leadership qualities, they would get out on the dance floor, and she would automatically lead. That is just normal for her. They have been learning that the man is to be the "leader" when dancing. So one week, she made the choice to let him lead. They got on the dance floor, and she just stood there. Her dear husband asked her when she was going to start. She told him that she wasn't and that she was waiting for him to lead her. It felt very awkward for both of them. The next week, the same thing happened. She was learning to let go and let her husband lead her. It was a slow process, but necessary if they were to dance well together. She had to let her husband steer her around the dance floor. If they both wanted to lead, it would cause a lot of trouble and problems. In fact, they would go nowhere. They would be standing in the middle of the floor looking at each other.

I thought about how this could apply to our spiritual lives. So many times, we want to be in control. In fact, we often do take the controls and steer our lives wherever we want them to go. How many times have we steered in the wrong direction and gotten into trouble? Sometimes it is so hard to let go of that steering wheel and let God take us on the journey that He wants us to go on. But it is absolutely necessary to surrender control, if we are to please Him in our lives and if we are to be a blessing to others around us. We have to learn to let go of controlling our own lives and let our heavenly Father steer us in the right direction. It is only then that we can dance in harmony and let others see what Jesus leading us can do in our lives.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for leading us and guiding us in the dance of our lives. You know the right way to lead. Help each of us to follow Your leadership so that others can see the harmony in our lives. Amen.
