Pansies

Devotional for Thursday, August 4, 2005 by Judy Miller

John 7:37 - On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink". (NIV)

I was sitting out in my yard enjoying the beautiful warm day. I was soaking in the sunshine, as were the flowers in my backyard. As I was looking at each of them, I noticed that some of my gorgeous orange pansies were wilting in the heat. I was quite amazed because we had had several heavy showers that week. Then I realized that the rain had come from the other direction, so the flowers along the east side of the house hadn't had the opportunity to be refreshed by the plenteous showers the other plants had enjoyed on the west side of the house.

I quickly got the hose out and watered them sufficiently. In a short while, they looked so much better. As I was watering them, I thought about how desperately we need the refreshing water of the Word of God so that we won't wilt under the hot trials in life. My pansies had rain around them, but it didn't help. God's words around us won't suffice either. Oh, let's go to the fountain often and drink! We will be refreshed.

Matthew 5:6 - Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (NIV)

Prayer: Thank You for this lesson in nature. We don't want to wilt. We want to grow. Help us to be ever mindful to drink from Your fountain to quench our thirst. Amen.
