A Willing Heart

Devotional for Friday, August 5, 2005 by Brenda Wood

Psalm 119:32 - I will [not merely walk, but] run the way of Your commandments, when You give me a heart that is willing. (AMP)

For sixteen years, I was the captive of an addictive food disorder called bulimia. For the last four of those years, I was a Christian. I wanted desperately to stop this terrible cycle of getting rid of my food after I ate it, but I just didn't seem to have the power to do so.

Then one day, I suddenly realized that I didn't want to live that way anymore. God had given me a heart that was willing. Though I have occasionally been tempted to fall back into bulimia, God's gift of a willing heart has kept me from slipping.

Each of us has some area of personal struggle. When God gives us a commandment and a heart that is willing, we can run (not walk!) into obedience.

Prayer: Dearest Father God, Keeper of willing hearts everywhere, we ask that You give us each a willing heart so that we can run into obedience. Forgive us for all the times we tried to make ourselves able, before You had even made us willing. In Jesus' name. Amen.
