Green And Green And Green

Devotional for Saturday, October 1, 2005 by Brenda Wood

Genesis 1:11-12 - God spoke: "Earth, green up! Grow all varieties of seed-bearing plants, every sort of fruit-bearing tree." And there it was. Earth produced green seed-bearing plants, all varieties, and fruit-bearing trees of all sorts. God saw that it was good. (MSG)

October is here again, and riotous colours pour across the Ontario landscape. The trees are sporting every variety of red, auburn, gold, and green. These, of course, are the expected shades of fall in these parts. Around the corner from our place, however, there stands a maple tree dressed completely in hot pink! Who would ever think it?! Why, the great God of the unexpected, of course!

Ponder it! He could have given us just one shade of green. Instead He gave us avocado green and lime green and aqua green and grass green -- more greens than we can even count! What an imagination!

That wonderful God also created us. Each one of us is different, yet the same: created and redeemed to do and to be the unexpected to the lost around us.

What shade of God's green are we serving up for the world today?

Prayer: Wonderful, imaginative God, thanks for helping each of us to display some of Your green to someone today. Give us the imagination to think beyond one shade. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
