Lights In The Dark

Devotional for Friday, November 18, 2005 by Judy Miller

Psalm 139:23-24 - Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I'm about. See for yourself whether I've done anything wrong -- then guide me on the road to eternal life. (MSG)

Over the years, we have had thirteen different international students living with us. They always bring small traditional gifts for us when they come -- and often when they leave, as well.

One gift recently was a small replica of Chinese lanterns that the people carry on New Year's Eve in the dark. In Taiwan, they have real candles in them. In our miniature ones, the light is battery-operated. I could just imagine children being thrilled with these little lanterns. They could run into a closet and shut the door so their lantern would light up the space inside. Then they could run to another room, close the blinds and the door, and look into the corners of the room. What would they see, though? Would all the corners be clean, or would there be some cobwebs, some dirt, something that didn't belong there, taking up space?

Jesus wants to look into the rooms in our hearts. He wants to expose every nook and cranny to His light. I wonder what He will see there. Are there cobwebs that try to make fuzzy the things that God's Word says are clearly wrong? Is there dirt that should be cleaned out, those cherished sins that we don't want to give up? Is there stuff stored there, like old grudges, that should be thrown away? Oh, how He wants to remove those things and to cleanse our lives from all our sin. A thought-provoking question, though, is "Will we let Him shine His light into every room in our hearts?"

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your light. Like the psalmist said, investigate our lives, O God. Find out everything about us. Cross-examine and test us, and get a clear picture of what we're about. Amen.
