Stumbling Child

Devotional for Monday, January 29, 2007 by Julie Bowles

Psalm 91:3,11,12 - His huge outstretched arms protect you -- under them you're perfectly safe; his arms fend off all harm. He ordered his angels to guard you wherever you go. If you stumble, they'll catch you; their job is to keep you from falling. (MSG)

We live across the road from a school. After a recent storm in which we received first rain, then freezing rain, and then snow, I happened to be looking out the window and saw a mother and her child making their way to the school. The child began to fall, as the ice was hidden under the snow. The mother immediately reached out and caught the child before he fell. The child and mother continued on their way. This time, though, the child held tightly onto the hand of his mother.

This vignette can alert us to a few spiritual things, the first being that we need to know where we are treading, as was evident in the ice under the snow. We also need to stay close to someone who can help us when we stumble, and hang onto the hand of someone as we go.

In all situations, Jesus can be a part of our lives. He is aware of our needs even before we become aware, and He knows about the icy patches in our lives. He is always there to help us when we stumble, and He wants to hold onto our hand as we walk through our life with Him.

Proverbs 4:12 - When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, and when you run, you will not stumble. (NKJV)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we thank You for going before us and for the times you catch us when we stumble. We thank You for always taking our hand and never letting us down when we reach out to Your hand. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
