Matthew 16:1-3 - The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' and in the morning, 'Today, it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times." (NIV)The favourite topic of conversation in my part of the world is the weather. The first thing most people check upon rising in the morning is the temperature and the weather report, and then the day is planned accordingly. When we meet a friend on the street, the status of the weather is the main topic of our conversation. During hurricane season or a drought or a period of heavy rain, the weather wins out over politics and sports as the favourite topic to be discussed.
What if we were as excited about our spiritual life as about the weather? If our Scriptures were discussed with as much enthusiasm as the weather, would the knowledge contained there be better known? In today's verses from Matthew, Jesus chides the Pharisees and Sadducees for not discerning the times in which they lived. Likewise, many Christians today live in total ignorance of God's mighty workings, because of Bible neglect.
Will we talk more about the weather today than about God's Word? Let's examine today's topics of conversation, and see which one comes out ahead.
Prayer: Lord, forgive us for our lack of knowledge of Your Word. Help us to keep our priorities on the important things of life and to be discerning of the times in which we live. May our priorities be set on You, our Creator, rather than on Your creation. Amen.
