Shimmering Reflections

Devotional for Monday, November 12, 2007 by Julie Bowles

Genesis 1:2 - The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (NKJV)

Recently, after spending a day with our boys, we were sitting and talking with them, when my husband noticed the sunlight reflecting off the water onto the trees, and he pointed it out to us. When we focussed our eyes on what he had seen, we saw slowly undulating patches of light reflecting off the calm water onto the trees along the shoreline. I have often seen the reflection of trees in the water before, but I have never seen the water reflecting sunlight onto the trees. What made this so different was that, if you followed the land, you could actually see the reflection shimmering from tree to tree. The trees were not blowing -- they were completely still -- yet the reflection from the water was moving from tree to tree. It lasted only about five minutes, and then, it was gone.

As we talked with one another about what we had just witnessed, we all wondered if there was a parallel here with how the Holy Spirit moves, as the Lord imparts into our lives His gentleness and His grace. His Spirit moves ever so gently in our lives, and as we were shown, we can miss it so easily.

For me and my family, the picture of that gently shimmering light has become fixed in our hearts as a special way of reflecting upon our Lord during our devotional time with Him.

Daniel 4:3 - How great are His signs, and how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion is from generation to generation. (NKJV)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for Your gift of life through the Holy Spirit. Help us to draw closer to You through the times when You reveal Yourself to us. Our walk is to be in closeness with You, and through this time, may we draw others to Your side. We thank You for the many ways that You reveal Yourself to us in our lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
