Travelling In The Dark

Devotional for Thursday, January 31, 2008 by Julie Bowles

Genesis 1:16 - Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. (NKJV)

Our business often takes us on the road. Usually, we take the time to plan our route and our calls for that particular day or days. If business requires us to stay away for a night, we always try to have the accommodations pre-booked. This means that when our day is done, we don't have to spend time and energy looking for a place to stay. Using the Internet, including maps on the computer and the Global Positioning System (GPS), planning our day and booking our stay has become an easier and quicker process. Using GPS, we are often able to see via the Internet the place where we are going to stay.

A recent trip took us away for the night. After making our calls for the day, a rainy and dreary one, the darkness seemed to close in even earlier. Our arrival at the hotel for the night was in the dark. We were tired after the calls and rainy roads of the day. The curtains were drawn on the room, and after a quick glance out the window into the darkness, we settled in for the night.

In the morning, I again glanced out the window and saw the pool and spacious grass and recreational area of the hotel grounds. What had been shrouded in darkness was now in the light, and much more was revealed than I had anticipated.

Even with all the technology and information available to me, I was surprised at what the light had revealed about my surroundings.

Our spiritual walk can also be like that. We can rely on the computer and teachings and tapes more than we rely on the Bible and the Lord to reveal the light to us. We get tangled up in the darkness, searching and seeking for a way out, when we have only to turn on the light of the world -- Jesus.

John 8:12 - Jesus said to the people, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." (NLT)

Prayer: Lord, help us to turn to Your Word first for our light in the darkness. We thank You that Jesus is the light of the world. We are sorry for the time we have wasted, stumbling around in the darkness. Help us to look to You, so that we can bring more light into the world through You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
