Keep Looking Ahead

Devotional for Tuesday, March 25, 2008 by Betty Carter

Proverbs 4:25 - Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. (NIV)

When I was a teenager, I went to visit my aunt and uncle at their cottage. They had a motor boat. The other family members were sitting on the deck enjoying the warm, sunny weather. My uncle invited me to have a ride in the motor boat and decided to let me drive it. I can remember looking over my shoulder, while steering with one hand and waving with the other hand to everyone on the deck. Then my uncle, in a calm, gentle voice said, "You'd better look ahead." So I turned my head, and there in front of us was a line of trees on the land, close to the shore where we were headed. I swiftly turned the steering wheel, and fortunately, the boat was turned away from that near mishap.

I think that many times during our life's journey, we have looked back -- times when we have gone astray or steered off the right course. Then we hear that soft, gentle voice of Jesus warning us, "Look, look ahead." It is God Who arms us with strength and makes our way perfect. We just have to take the time to listen and obey God's promptings to avoid those near mishaps.

Psalm 119:105 - Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (NIV)

Philippians 3:12b-13 - But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Father God, continue to guide us in this earthly journey. Help us to focus our eyes on Jesus and to keep on your righteous paths. In Jesus' name. Amen.
