Angels

Devotional for Sunday, June 15, 2008 by Judy Miller

Philippians 4:19 - My God will richly fill your every need in a glorious way through Christ Jesus. (GWT)

Matthew 4:11b - Behold, angels came and ministered unto him. (ASV)

Genesis 32:1 - And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. (ASV)

On Father's Day, my dad will have been gone for seven years. He lived a good long life; he served the Lord all his life; he was a kind dad. Each year in the spring, I reminisce about my dad and the years we had together, talking and learning and growing.

When he passed on, I would go for long walks in the beautiful spring weather. We live near a lake, so I would walk up by the lake and find a secluded park bench to sit and weep. One time, a young lady and her dog came along, just as I sat down. We chatted about my grieving of Dad's passing, and how short life really is, and how we don't know if we have another day or not. I have thought about that young lady often. I had never seen her before that day; I have never seen her since. I wonder if she was an angel sent by God to be there for me when I needed it the most.

Angels of God do meet us; they do minister to us. Often, I think, they come in human form. God uses others to richly fill our every need in a glorious way through Christ Jesus. Let's be humble enough to accept the help, the comfort, and the compassion that others can give us. The other part of this is, do we reach out to others when they are grieving or hurting? Do we want to be used of God to minister to someone in need?

Prayer: God, You care so much when we lose a loved one, or are going through a rough time. Thank You for reaching down and supplying our every need. Thank You for sending people -- often strangers -- along our paths to minister to us. Help us to be sensitive to Your urgings and whisperings in our souls to reach out to others, whether we know them or not. Father, we want to be used by You; we also need comfort and support at times as well. Help us, we pray. Amen.
