Choose Life

Genesis 1:31a - And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. (KJV)Deuteronomy 30:15,19b - See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. (NIV)
Without giving away my age, I was thinking back to the times when we would venture up north for the summer holidays. I can remember walking along the sandy shore of the crystal clear lake and watching the fish in the early morning, feeding along the shore line.
Not having returned to the northern lakes for some years, I noticed last summer that they had turned black. I felt I had been blinded -- unable to see through the pollution that now filled the lakes.
Although today's Scriptures were first given to the Israelites, we realize that they are also for us. Our first verse tells us that in the beginning, God created the earth, and everything in it was good. The Bible indicates that God has given all of us dominion over the earth. In the second Scripture, God gives us a choice between life and prosperity on the one hand, and death and destruction on the other. All of us will one day face death, and in the meantime, it is we who are carelessly bringing destruction on the earth and its inhabitants.
Once more, God comes to our rescue in His Son, Jesus the Christ. Through His death, He took away all our sins, and He has given us the blessing of the final choice: eternal life, a relationship with God.
We are called to choose that life, so that even in death, we will prosper in the freedom of eternal life, while the world around us spins in the face of destruction!
Prayer: Dear Lord, it is not the earth that we worship, but rather it is You. Though we have destroyed much of Your creation and the environment that surrounds us, we thank You that You have given us the choice of eternal life in Christ. Amen.
