Bridge Over Troubled Waters

Devotional for Tuesday, August 5, 2008 by Kirsti Sipila

1 Thessalonians 5:11 - Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. (RSV)

I spend a lot of time looking out my seventh-floor window. I have never lived in this high a place before. It is as if I am perched high above a panorama opening to my field of vision.

Amongst the asphalt and cement, I can see green patches and trees that are planted wherever a spot can be found for them. Heavy cement containers for flowers are ideally set in every available space.

The city is awake. Throngs of people of all ages are getting to work, to school. The traffic lights conduct the flow of cars in orderly fashion.

I thank God above for all His good things below. The sun is out, shining over the good and evil. I pray for blessings of grace, justice, and peace.

My eyes rise to the distant tree line. A bridge carries drivers in cars over a river, out of my vision. They disappear on the other side. The soft green trees cordially embrace all who enter there. We know that the road continues, and the bridge brings back those who return.

There is a bridge over the troubled waters of the soul, a bridge built by God in Jesus Christ, a bridge built by blood of the Lamb, a bridge to everlasting life, a bridge of faith to eternal well-being!

We know that life continues hereafter. Our great hope is that, after we cross that bridge of no return, our passing will somehow leave a message for those we have met in this life.

As we "continue to work out [our] salvation" (Philippians 2:12), let us also continue to alert others to God's bridge over troubled waters.

Prayer: God of mercy and grace, we need to be found on Your bridge over troubled waters. Help our little faith to get on that bridge. Hear our hearts' weakened throbs. In You we have our strength, in Jesus Christ our hope. Amen.
