Solar Lights

Devotional for Thursday, August 7, 2008 by Anne Russell

1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NIV)

In restoring the solar lights in our garden area, I noted that the solar cells that cover the tops of the lamps had become covered with a film of lime, caused by rain and lawn watering.

By removing this film to allow the sun's rays to penetrate the solar cells, I thought that the batteries would come to a fuller capacity and produce a brighter light. And it worked!

With this in mind, I questioned myself about what the dark film is that causes our spiritual batteries to run down and our light in this dark world to grow dim, not being as radiant as we might like it to be. That film is anything that stands between us and the light of God's Holy Spirit, who empowers us for our daily Christian living. So easily, we can lose our enthusiasm, become run down, and lack the energy to produce good works for the Lord. As people chosen by God, we must remove anything that comes between us and that wonderful light.

Having fellowship with fellow Christians, immersing ourselves in reading and studying our Bibles, seeking God in prayer through Jesus, and ensuring that our actions are in full obedience to His commands are some of the ways in which we can remove any film that tries to dim our light. As they say, "If God seems far away, guess who moved?"

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, may we never turn from You. Enable us to let You be in control of our lives, so that our light may ever shine for You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
