Banquet For All

Devotional for Saturday, December 13, 2008 by Julie Bowles

Our Church does a banquet each December called the "We Care Banquet". After Sunday services are done, the sanctuary is transformed into a banquet hall, complete with white table cloths, dishes, and table centers. Many of the chairs are removed, and tables are put in their place, ready to feed about 200 people: people from our community who may or may not have a family to have Christmas dinner with; people who are in need of work; families struggling to make ends meet. It takes about 150 volunteers to put this event together. Buses and friends bring our guests from places throughout the city, and for two hours, we fellowship, share the love of Jesus, and yes, eat a feast of Christmas dinner.

Now, I am sure that many of our churches do similar events, and this got me thinking, as I read the following verse, that we are all called to spread the good news to the lost.

Revelation 19:9 - Then the angel said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!'" And he added, "These are the true words of God." (NIV)

Just think of the impact we could have on this earth if each and every person had an opportunity to partake in a meal at the banquet table with Jesus! Friends, family, neighbours, the people we work with -- have they been given the opportunity to sit at the banquet table? This holiday season, how can we extend this opportunity to others?

1 Peter 5:4 - And when the Head Shepherd comes, your reward will be a never-ending share in his glory and honour. (TLB)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we thank You for the abundance that You have blessed us with. Help us to extend the invitation to eat at Your banquet table to all we meet. It is our hearts' desire, as is Yours, that none should perish. Show us how we can be Your hands and feet in this enterprise. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
