Fill Your Boots

Devotional for Friday, May 1, 2009 by Lauretta Balderston

Psalm 8:1a - O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (NIV)

Psalm 47:2 - How awesome is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth! (NIV)

We often sing, "Fill my cup, Lord; I lift it up, Lord", and we fully expect that God will fill our souls to overflowing as we worship Him with expectation.

Since our move to this "neck of the woods" in Nova Scotia, an oft-used saying is "Fill your boots." At first, I thought it to be a strange phrase that was kind of sassy. Then, I realized that it was telling people to really enjoy everything to the fullest. It was another way of saying "Fill my cup" -- aiming to lift my spirits to great heights.

That's what the Lord wants all of us to do. He wants us to experience His love fully and to enjoy it to the fullest every day we have the pleasure of living. We should try to be an encouragement to others, to extend the hand of friendship to everyone we meet, and to leave them with a warm sense of happiness that by meeting together, we were able to share life and laughter. We should enjoy the sun that warms our earth and makes us feel better. We should enjoy the rain that refreshes the earth and cleanses the dirt away. We should enjoy the wind that removes the debris from our yards and our minds, leaving them uncluttered and able to be filled with peace, happiness, and joy. "The Lord will indeed give what is good." (Psalm 85:12a NIV)

That's exactly what the love of God does for us when we ask Him. Like the wind, He removes whatever is blocking our walk with Him. Like the sun after the rain, He restores our hope and faith, so we can see His world and rejoice in it. He wants us to be His fragrance as we live and move within our community, so people will know His presence walked, laughed, loved, and lived with them that day. He wants to help us to "fill our boots" as He does indeed fill our cup to overflowing.

2 Corinthians 2:15,16b - For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing ... the fragrance of life. (NIV)

Let us remember to let Him fill us, use us, and reveal Himself through us as we strive every day to be more like Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord, keep us ever mindful of how wonderful You are and how much You want us to be, always, a reflection of You, every day, to all we meet. Amen.
