Road Signs

Devotional for Wednesday, January 20, 2010 by Lynne Phipps

Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (NLT)

As a school bus driver, knowing and obeying road signs is especially important. I have held the lives of many young children in my hands as I traversed the roads from their homes to school and back day by day. One does not have time to be daydreaming, worrying, or having a bad day when driving a busload of children. Safety is always job number one, and the rules of the road are there to be followed for everyone's well-being.

Likewise, God has placed road signs for life for His people within His Word, such as these:

Proverbs 1:10 - My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them! (NLT)
Proverbs 2:20 - Follow the steps of good men instead, and stay on the paths of the righteous. (NLT)
Philippians 4:6 - Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. (NLT)
Matthew 7:12 - Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. (NLT)

The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes are road signs, and the book of Deuteronomy has many more as well. In fact, there isn't a book in the Bible that does not contain road signs for life from God. All of these road signs are for our benefit and our good, and not our woe, as they help us to travel through this life as safely and pleasantly as possible.

This new year brings with it many, many opportunities to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not to depend on our own understanding. Opportunities to seek His will and to do it will be abundant. Our success, however, in these endeavours will hinge on our willingness to obey His road signs -- signs which will show us not only the right paths to choose but also how to traverse them.

Prayer: Lord God, please help us to want to grow day by day in trust and obedience to You and Your road signs for life, so that things will go as well as possible for each and every one of us throughout this new year. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
