Two By Two

Devotional for Sunday, July 25, 2010 by Julie Bowles

Genesis 7:15 - And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. (NKJV)

On a recent camping trip, we found our site to be on the water's edge, a perfect place to watch the sunrise, to enjoy my coffee, and most importantly, to have my time with the Lord. As I sat at the water's edge, I heard the sound of ducks. A few moments later, two ducks swam past me. A few minutes later, I heard the sound again, and two more ducks passed by me. This happened a few more times. Then, I heard the sound again, and no duck appeared. The sound came again, and no duck appeared. Once again, the sound was heard, and then, slowly, one duck swam past me. As this duck swam past, it kept looking backwards and did not swim as gracefully as the others, but rather, tentatively.

As I reflected on this occurrence as I continued to sit by the water, I began to think about how the Lord had Noah take two of each animal into the ark, one male and one female. Another verse also talks about going out two by two:

Luke 10:1 - After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. (NKJV)

Our world seems to promote self-sufficiency and a belief that we can do it on our own. If you are like me, we can easily fall into the trap of thinking and believing that we can do it on our own. So, the next time I find myself in the "I can do it by myself" mode, I want to be reminded of the ducks that day on the lake going past two by two.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we want to be effective in our witness of You to others. Please send people into our lives so that we can go out into the world two by two. In times when we do find ourselves on our own, help us to remember that You are always with us and go with us always. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
