A Question Of Trust

Devotional for Monday, August 16, 2010 by Iris Ford

Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (NLT)

Years ago, in my teens, we used to play a trusting game which was hard to do. We stood in a circle, and one by one, we fell over backwards, trusting the person beside us to be standing behind to catch us. It was a funny feeling even then, of letting go and falling. Could I do it now? I doubt it. It's harder now to trust another when age is already making me weaker.

This morning, I lay on my bed fretting about my high blood pressure, which always seems to be sky-high now. It was a bad start to the day; what to do? Pray, of course! Then, today's Scripture verse about trusting the Lord came into my mind, and it struck me that I don't really know how to trust. How does one really let go and trust the Lord? How does one seek His will each day, every moment?

So, do I really trust the Lord to catch me when I am making bad decisions or when I am wavering in my commitment to Him? This is another of those surprising learning curves. I must learn to trust the Lord completely, for whatever does "with all my heart" mean unless it is complete trust?

Now I am working on trusting day by day, moment by moment. But even as I say that, I realize that "working on it" is not the answer. I must simply let it all go into Jesus' hands, seek His will for me, and relax. That is trusting.

I suspect that my blood pressure wouldn't be so high if I really trusted the Lord to direct my path. It is the unseen, the future steps, the worry of what is coming today that makes me tense and untrusting.

Wow! Do I ever have a lot to learn about trust! Thankfully, this verse helps me form a trusting attitude. I say it to myself over and over again through the day, and yes, I am more relaxed. Something heavy is off my shoulders, and that's important, for I broke my right shoulder in March of this year!

Through all the pathways of life. this is an important lesson: we trust the Lord as He goes ahead, preparing the path along which we must go. It is a wonderfully relaxed journey when we let go and put our lives, our future, and yes, our very bodies into His keeping.

Prayer: Lord, as we go through this day, teach us to really trust You. May we repeat this verse over and over again until its truth permeates our very being. We let go, and we trust every moment of this day into Your keeping. Guide us, O Lord, along the paths You have set out, as we follow, trusting everything into Your care and keeping. We are relaxed as You safely take us through every moment. How wonderful it is to have You close beside us in all we do. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
